Bouteloua gracilis 'Blonde Ambition'
The very talented plantsman David Salmon of New Mexico spotted this golden flowered form of the typical Blue Grama Grass and he just might have found one of the most versatile and beautiful native grass of all time.
Similar to the species described above it is distinguished from the species by both a slightly larger stature and showy golden yellow flowers instead of the typical gray. Foliage on Bouteloua 'Blonde Ambition' is 6-12" high with flowers held 12"-16" above the foliage. The flowers emerge in the spring almost an electric characteristic, and mature to a golden yellow that is attractive on the plant well into winter dormancy.
Bouteloua 'Blonde Ambition' has so many uses in the garden from ground cover to flowering accent. A excellent choice as a companion to succulents. Similarly in all other respects to the species but it larger size and robust growth make it less suitable for a lawn. It is patented and unauthorized propagation is prohibited.
Greenlee Takeaway:
This is a go-to grass for me for so many reason. I often use it in combination with Mediterranean bulbs and will often mix Bouteloua gracilis with the straight species as a subtle accent. Magnificent when back lit by late or early light.
