About The Hosts/Speakers
John Greenlee
Known as the “Grassman” in horticultural circles, John Greenlee is an internationally known horticulturist and landscape designer specializing in the cultivation and study of grasses and grass-like plants. He is the author of The Encyclopedia of Ornamental Grasses (Rodale, 1992) and The American Meadow Garden (Timber Press, 2009). As an expert in grass ecology and champion of sustainable design, Greenlee has made meadows throughout the United States and around the world, including the Getty Museum and the Norton Smith Museum in Los Angeles, the San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park, and the savannas at Walt Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Florida. He has designed meadows for private residencies including those of Michelle Pfeiffer, Tia Lionne, David Duchovny, Steven Spielberg, Ellen DeGeneres and Kathryn Bigelow. Through popular demand, Greenlee lectures throughout the U.S. and Canada on the use of natural lawns, native grasses and meadow restoration.

Wendy Proud
Wendy has a degree in ornamental horticulture from Cal Poly, Pomona in addition to twenty-five years of sales and production experience in the retail and wholesale nursery business.
Among her various positions held with several So. California nurseries, Wendy also co-owned and operated Proud Murphy Inc., a landscape design and installation company in the Pasadena, CA area. Her business promoted proper plant selection and organic gardening practices with bi-yearly and quarterly maintenance schedules.
Throughout her career, Wendy has provided numerous plant presentations, lectures and interviews to a wide variety of magazines, TV/cable shows, organizations, garden clubs and nurseries. In addition, she is a past president of the Los Angeles chapter of the California Association of Nurseries and Garden Centers, providing scholarships to students pursuing careers in the horticulture field.
In late 2009, Wendy joined Mountain States Wholesale Nursery based in Phoenix, Arizona. In her new role as California Sales Representative, she was instantly hooked on desert adapted plants and the desire to inspire others about the beauty and diversity of plants from the Southwest and other arid regions.

Principal, WaterWonk Lori is an irrigation designer, consultant, and APLD member who fell in love with irrigation about 16 years ago as a landscape contractor, and has been playing with water ever since. She is the founding partner of WaterWonk, a company whose mission is to empower all landscape professionals to practice impeccable water efficiency in their projects. A self-professed water-efficiency evangelist, Lori teaches irrigation for Bay Friendly, QWEL, Master Gardener, and Green Gardener trainings. She regularly speaks to college landscape architecture and horticulture classes, professional landscape associations, garden clubs, homeowner classes, and basically anybody who will listen. Lori’s true love these days is programming web applications for designing and implementing water-efficient landscapes. Her website WaterWonk.us will soon house the powerful professional web tools she has developed. |
Duncan McKee
Nearly 40 years in the landscaping industry and 30 years in the nursery business. Currently work in the Plant Science Department at Cal Poly Pomona specializing in Plant Tissue Culture, Greenhouse Management, Hydroponics, Landscape Horticulture and Soil Science. Education began at Mount SAC and was inspired by Dave Lannom. Earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Ornamental Horticulture with a Nursery Management emphasis and a minor in Plant Pathology from Cal Poly Pomona. Masters of Science in Plant Science and Technology/Agricultural Science from Cal Poly Pomona. Owner of McKee’s Palms a modest nursery that specializes in Palms, Cycads, Bamboo and other unusual plant material.

Jacky Surber is the founder of Urbafloria, a landscape design company dedicated to creating gardens that connect people with nature every day of their lives.
With a degree in Environmental Studies and a Permaculture Design Certificate she clearly understands ecological systems and how to utilize them to inspire functional designs that are certified Ocean Friendly and Certified Wildlife Habitat. Her background in organic farming shows in her knowledge of soils, edible gardening, and natural pest control. She was first certified as a Sustainable Landscape Professional with G3 in 2009 and had gardens featured on the Mar Vista Green Garden Showcase, the Theodore Payne Garden Tour, and the APLD Watershed Approach Garden tours. She now serves as past president of the Association of Professional Landscape Designers, Los Angeles Chapter. |
Lisa Bellora
Past-President San Diego District of the Association of Professional Landscape Designers (APLD) Lisa Bellora is an award winning residential landscape designer and owner of Ornamental Gardens by Lisa. She has an A.S. degree in Landscape Design as well as a B.S. in Chemistry. Lisa’s background includes working as an environmental science research chemist for a large agricultural company. She is programs chair for APLD San Diego and a past board member of the San Diego Horticultural Society. She is a G3 certified Watershed Wise Landscape Professional and is very passionate about the environment as well as good design |
